From Managua, take the highway north to Matagalpa (about 2 hours), then follow the road toward San Ramón via the Carretera a Muy Muy. One kilometer north of the El Trentino entrance, look for our sign on the hillside. The total drive from Managua's airport is roughly 2.5 hours.

Do I need a car to visit Tierra Alta Ecolodge?

No car needed. Buses run regularly from Matagalpa to San Ramón. Message us your arrival time and we can help with the last stretch up to the property.

What is the best time of year to visit Tierra Alta Ecolodge?

The dry season (December to April) brings clear skies and easier hiking. The rainy season (May to November) turns the hillside intensely green, and wildlife is more active. We're open year-round and both seasons have their appeal.

What wildlife can I see at Tierra Alta Ecolodge?

The property has three dogs, a macaw, goats, and a full yard of chickens, roosters, and turkeys — you will hear the roosters. Along the river: howler monkeys most mornings, often before sunrise. Sloths near the rancho trail, a barn owl in the garden most nights. The Matagalpa cloud forest has over 200 bird species including the Resplendent Quetzal (March through June), Three-wattled Bellbird, Keel-billed Toucan, and dozens of hummingbirds and woodpeckers. Coatis, armadillos, and occasional ocelot sightings. Tree frogs, dart frogs, and iguanas are common. Nothing is staged.

What is included in the nightly rate?

The cabin rate is $80 per night, which includes use of the trails, wet sauna, and all common areas. For $120 per night, meals cooked by Tila from the garden are included. Rates are per cabin, not per person, and each cabin sleeps up to 3 guests.

Is Tierra Alta Ecolodge a sustainable or eco-friendly property?

The cabins were built by hand over ten years using local materials. We grow much of the food served on site, buy from neighbors who grow what we don't, and regularly plant trees on the hillside. There's no resort infrastructure — just a working hillside property that pays attention to how it exists.

Is there WiFi or power at Tierra Alta Ecolodge?

Accepted Answer

Each cabin runs on a small solar setup. Power is generally reliable but expect occasional outages — this is a remote hillside property. There is no WiFi. However, 4G mobile data is solid on the property, so your phone will work fine. Most guests end up calling the lack of WiFi a relief.
